Futures Contract
A futures contract is a standardized agreement to buy or sell a specific quantity of something — a stock index, a commodity like oil or corn, a currency, or an interest rate product — at a price agreed today, with delivery or settlement happening on a set date in the future. The buyer and seller are locking in a price now, even though the actual exchange of the asset (or cash equivalent) happens later.
These contracts trade on organized exchanges, which is what makes them "standardized": the contract size, expiration dates, and quality specifications are fixed by the exchange rather than negotiated between the two parties. This is different from a forward contract, which is a private, customizable agreement between two parties with no exchange in the middle. Because futures trade on an exchange, they have a visible market price that moves constantly during the trading day, and traders can enter or exit a position long before the expiration date simply by taking the opposite trade.
The mechanic that trips up beginners is that most futures traders never intend to make or take delivery of the underlying asset. A day trader buying an S&P 500 futures contract isn't planning to receive a basket of stocks — they're speculating on price movement and will close the position, usually the same day, well before expiration. Delivery and settlement matter mostly to commercial users (like an airline hedging fuel costs) and to anyone still holding the contract when it expires.
Futures are also traded on margin, meaning you only post a fraction of the contract's full value as collateral. This creates leverage: a small price move in the underlying can produce a large gain or loss relative to the money you put up. That leverage, combined with the fact that contracts have multipliers (a set dollar value per point of price movement), is why futures can move an account's balance quickly in either direction.
This term depends on a rule or threshold that changes over time, so no specific figure is quoted here. The example uses illustrative E-mini S&P 500 tick value ($12.50) and point value ($50), which are set by the exchange (CME) and should be confirmed against current CME contract specifications before publishing, as should any margin requirement figures. Day traders use futures for leveraged, near 24-hour exposure to markets like the S&P 500 or crude oil without owning the underlying asset, but that same leverage means losses can accumulate as fast as gains within a single session.
A trader buys one E-mini S&P 500 futures contract at 5,000. Each 0.25-point tick is worth $12.50, and each full point is worth $50. If the price rises to 5,020 and the trader sells to close, that's a 20-point gain, or $1,000, on a contract they controlled by posting only a few thousand dollars in margin — far less than the roughly $250,000 notional value of the contract itself.
