Mod or Moderator

A moderator, or "mod," is a person who has been given special administrative privileges inside a chatroom, forum, or trading community. In a trading context, this usually means a chatroom attached to a trading education service, a broker's community platform, or a social trading app, where the mod is often an experienced trader tasked with keeping the room running smoothly.

Moderators typically have permissions ordinary members don't: they can post announcements, pin important messages, mute or remove disruptive users, and sometimes lead discussion during market hours by sharing their own trade ideas, chart annotations, or commentary. In many rooms, mods are also the people newer members go to with questions about how the platform or community works.

The nuance that trips people up is that "moderator" is a role, not a credential. Being a mod means someone has trust and access within a particular community's chat tool — it does not by itself mean they are a licensed financial advisor, a professional money manager, or verified to have any particular trading track record. Some mods are simply long-time, experienced members; others may be staff of the service running the room. It's worth understanding who granted the status and why before treating a mod's commentary as more authoritative than any other trader's opinion.

Because rooms vary widely, the specific privileges and vetting behind the "moderator" label depend entirely on the platform or community in question, not on any industry-wide standard.
