A breakout tape that kept giving, led by the space names

With indices pressing all-time highs, our desk leaned long into daily breakouts. The headline trade was a space-sector breakout long that was stopped on the first attempt, re-entered on the VWAP retest and then managed in stages: most of the position scaled into strength, the remainder trailed higher until it was taken out. A premarket gap-fill long in a mega-cap worked quickly; two shorts into prior-day resistance came off small.

Net points are per share. Apply your own size to get your own number: at 1,000 shares, 5.14 points is $5,140.00. At 100 shares it is $514.00. At one share it is $5.14. The desk publishes the move, not a dollar result, because the dollars depend entirely on how you size, and that is your decision rather than ours.

A breakout tape that kept giving, led by the space names — session recording

The 1h 07m session is on the other side of this.

Everything above is the write-up. This is the morning itself, with the names on every call and the room talking through it.

The premarket read was simple and it held: eight gainers to two decliners on the scanner, no resistance overhead on the index, and a watchlist marked long-only on two of the names. That framing is what made the morning, because it meant the first failed attempt on the breakout name was treated as a flush rather than as a reason to abandon the idea.

That name was taken first on the push through the daily level, scaled for half a point, and stopped on the pullback for a small loss. It was then re-entered off the VWAP retest with the stop under VWAP. Same thesis, cleaner risk. From there it was managed in public: three-quarters off into the first thrust, the remainder initially at breakeven, then trailed up in steps as the breakout extended, each move announced before the price got there rather than after. The runner came out with some slippage on the final flush, well above the average. The point worth stealing is the sequencing: the size came off where the move was obvious, and only the small piece was left to argue with the tape.

The other long of the day was a gap-to-close in a mega-cap, flagged premarket with the entry, the stop under low of day and the re-entry one point lower all stated in advance; it ran to target quickly and was closed without ceremony. Two shorts went the other way. A Moderna short had half taken for a point before the balance was wicked out at breakeven on a spread gap. The name then dropped a long way without it, which is a cost that does not show up on any statement. An Apple short into prior-day area was sized without adds and cut on the reclaim of the prior-day low, before the stop was hit, on the read that the level had failed. Late in the session a starter long was opened in Moderna with the add and stop stated, and left running into the close of the broadcast.
