← Options Glossary A type of indirect investment, a mutual fund is a professionally managed investment vehicle that contains pooled money from individual investors. Mutual funds use the pooled money to buy and sell securities with the intention of generating of positive return on investment. Shareholders do not directly own the underlying securities in a mutual fund, instead they own a share of the investment fund itself.
