Performance Section: Navigating the Markets in 2023

As we explore the performance of TrueTrader in 2023, it’s essential to understand the backdrop against which our trading community operated. The financial markets, much like the world at large, experienced a year filled with challenges and opportunities. Volatility was the name of the game, and our traders were poised to adapt and seize every moment.

Our mock account starts at 25k with a standard 4:1 margin applied giving us a starting buying power of 100k. In 2023 our trades added $126k in gains. That’s 500% from our initial capital of 25k.

This is done only by focusing on base-hits, not home runs, and our stats show that.

Adding $201k to our mock trade account, using real trades taken on live stream, represents an explosive 500%. Our theme has always been base-hits and this performance is consistent with that reality.

Let’s dive into the numbers that define our year. In 2023, we showed up and traded 245 trading days. During this time, our traders executed a remarkable 2,168 trades, averaging 8.85 trades per session resulting in an astounding 973% return on capital employed, and 500% account growth.

Wait… What is ROCE?

You probably noticed we had a ROCE % of 973% this year. How is it that our account only grew 500%? (“only” lol)

Let’s take a minute to talk about that.

ROCE is Return on Capital Employed. It’s a superior measure of trade performance, in our opinion, than PnL because every trader can use ROCE to apply to their own sizing profile. A new trader might deploy $5000 on a trade whereas a more experienced trader might deploy $500,000. Saying “we made $35,000 on this trade!” doesn’t help anyone understand performance. ROCE however, paints a far better picture.

Let’s use an example.

Say you had an $100,000 account and you take a trade. You deploy $100,000 (all in) on a trade and return 3% on your trade. Your trade AND account grew exactly 3%. +$3,000. Simple.

However in real-trading we rarely go all-in. Your position size is a sub-set of your overall account and thus your cumulative ROCE and overall account growth percentages will be very different.

Using the same example above let’s deploy $25,000 on a trade and return 3%. Our PnL would end up at +$750 and our account would be up 0.75%. Extrapolate that kind of performance over many trades and you’ll have a cumulative ROCE that is MUCH higher than your account growth.

This also shows an important factor in any profitable system: frequency of opportunity. Our strategies provide abundant opportunities in any market and we were well rewarded for our vigilance.

Our biggest drawdown in 2023 reached a total of $5,983.49, reflecting the turbulent nature of the markets we navigated. This drawdown coincided with the longest drawdown period of 20 days, spanning from August 15th to September 6th. As you can see from the chart below, our drawdowns were well managed under the 3% to 5% thresholds consistent with professional day trading.

The duration of some of these draw downs were trying, and we felt that pain during August and September. These were indeed trying times, as indicated by the monthly ROCE data.
